Doch warum das alles?
Wusstet ihr, dass es Kunststoffe mit positivem und welche mit negativem Wert gibt? Wo die Rückgewinnung von Plastik mit positivem Wert, wie etwa PET, für Produzenten rentabel sein kann, machen sie mit Plastik, das einen negativen Wert hat, sogar oft große Verluste. Hierzu gehört zum Beispiel Verpackungsmüll oder Plastiktüten, die deshalb besonders in ärmeren Ländern nicht gesammelt und verwertet werden. Forschungsergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass in diesen Teilen der Erde 80 bis 90 Prozent der Kunststoffabfälle mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit in Flüssen und Ozeanen landen.
Auch die weltweiten Zahlen sind erschreckend hoch: Lediglich 9 Prozent aller jemals produzierten Kunststoffabfälle wurden recycelt, 12 Prozent hingegen verbrannt und ganze 79 Prozent haben sich mittlerweile in der Umwelt angesammelt!
Die Organisation „Cleanhub“ möchte erreichen, dass es sich lohnt, auch Kunststoffe mit negativem Wert zu sammeln, anstatt es in der Natur sich selbst zu überlassen. In globalen Partnerschaften organisieren und verifizieren sie die Rückgewinnung von Plastikabfällen in Küstenregionen. Gemeinden, Städte und Länder auf der ganzen Welt sind dank ihrer Hilfe in der Lage, mit ihren Kunststoffabfällen umzugehen. Denn das „Cleanhub“-Netzwerk beinhaltet vor allem Verwertungsendpunkte, die Kunststoffe jeglicher Art abnehmen.
Ihre App verfolgt die Abfälle von der Sammlung bis zum endgültigen Verwertungs- oder Recycling-Endpunkt und vergibt dafür Plastikkredite, die an Konsumgüterunternehmen verkauft werden. Mit diesen Einnahmen finanzieren sie die Sammel- und Infrastrukturprojekte in verschmutzten Gebieten.
Mit unserer FOAMIE-Aktion unterstützen wir den „Cleanhub“-Sammelpartner „Green Worms Waste Management“. Hier sammeln Frauen aus Selbsthilfegruppen im indischen Edavanna den Plastikabfall, bevor er in die Meere gelangen kann. Die Organisation schafft in der Region wichtige Arbeitsplätze und unterstützt die angestellten Frauen. Ist das Plastik gesammelt, wird es in recycelbare und nicht recycelbare Materialien sortiert, also in Kunststoffe mit positivem und mit negativem Wert. Recycelbares Plastik wird auf dem lokalen Markt verkauft, das restliche Material wird ins Co-Processing transportiert – ein Prozess, bei dem die Stoffe recycelt und gleichzeitig Energie zurückgewonnen wird.
